Overview

  • The University of Tokyo and TSMC have formally opened a joint research laboratory on UTokyo’s Hongo campus to advance semiconductor research, education and talent incubation.
  • UTokyo faculty and staff will manage the lab under guidance from directors appointed by both institutions.
  • Research at the new facility will cover materials, device processes, metrology, packaging and circuit design.
  • The partnership builds on a collaboration that began in 2019 and UTokyo’s 2023 adoption of TSMC’s 16nm FinFET process for chip design training.
  • TSMC’s expansion in Japan and the United States continues as the company addresses skilled labor shortages, infrastructure constraints and deepens cooperation among Taiwan, Japan and the United States.
