TSE Publishes 2026 Voter Roll Showing Older, More Regionally Shifted Electorate

The finalized register changes planning for October voting by increasing overseas voters and boosting the North and Northeast share of the vote.

Overview

  • The Tribunal Superior Eleitoral published the official 2026 electoral roll on Monday, July 20, listing 158,745,463 registered voters, an increase of about 2.29 million (1.46%) from 2022.
  • The electorate is aging with 23.6% of voters aged 60 or older (≈37.5 million) while the number of voters 18 or younger fell by roughly 606,468 to 3,571,159, changing turnout patterns election officials must plan for.
  • Regional shifts concentrated growth in the North and Northeast while the Southeast was the only region to shrink, losing about 378,090 voters and reducing its share of the national electorate.
  • The number of Brazilians registered abroad jumped to 918,876, a rise of about 31.8%, with Lisbon the largest overseas post at 78,833 voters and implications for a closely contested presidential race.
  • The TSE’s improved collection of self-declared race and color produced a more complete, more diverse register and officials will use the new state and city totals to allocate polling stations, voting machines and teams for the October 4 first round and potential October 25 runoff.
