Overview
- The Tribunal Superior Eleitoral voted unanimously on Thursday, Aug. 27, to approve the use of federal forces for the first round of the 2026 elections in Acre, Ceará, Piauí, Tocantins and Rio de Janeiro.
- The operation will cover more than 100 municipalities, including a confirmed list of 66 cities in Ceará and state capitals such as Rio de Janeiro, Fortaleza, Teresina and Rio Branco.
- Local courts and municipal authorities asked for federal support because some voting sites are remote or hard to reach and because of threats tied to agrarian conflicts, prison complexes and criminal faction violence.
- The requests were made by Tribunais Regionais Eleitorais with state government assent and now must be sent to the Presidency for formal authorization before the Ministério da Defesa organizes troops from the Army, Navy and Air Force.
- The move follows precedent from 2022 and a July presidential decree allowing Armed Forces support for elections, and it aims to secure voting and logistics in riverine, indigenous and border communities where local police capacity is judged insufficient.
