Overview

  • Cordless curling irons, flat irons and hair straighteners with lithium batteries or gas/butane fuel are no longer permitted in checked luggage, the TSA says.
  • Passengers may carry on one cordless device and one gas cartridge only if a fitted safety cover prevents activation, and spare cartridges are prohibited.
  • Any cordless curling iron with a gas cartridge found in a checked bag will be removed and turned over to the airline as a hazardous materials item.
  • Corded plug-in hot tools remain allowed in checked baggage under the current rules.
  • TSA announced the update on Aug. 20 after FAA hazard guidance, and the agency warns violators could face fines or arrest.
