Overview

  • Cordless curling irons, flat irons and hair straighteners with lithium batteries or butane fuel are now restricted to carry-on bags only under new TSA rules announced Aug. 20.
  • Passengers may bring one cordless device and one gas cartridge in a carry-on if a fitted safety cover prevents activation, and spare cartridges are not permitted.
  • Any cordless curling iron with a gas cartridge found in checked luggage will be removed and turned over to the airline as a hazardous materials item.
  • Plug-in curling irons and straighteners that use a wall outlet remain allowed in checked baggage.
  • TSA cites FAA warnings that these items can leak, emit toxic fumes, ignite or explode, and the agency cautions that violations can trigger fines or arrest.
