Overview

  • The presidential runoff is scheduled for May 30 following a May 18 first round in which Trzaskowski led by a slim margin but fell short of a majority.
  • Opinion polls show both candidates tied at around 46-47 percent as they seek endorsements from Slawomir Mentzen’s far-right supporters.
  • Trzaskowski, Warsaw’s mayor and deputy leader of the pro-EU Civic Platform, has pledged to expand abortion rights and back civil unions for same-sex couples if elected.
  • Nawrocki, a political novice backed by the conservative Law and Justice party, opposes abortion and LGBTQ+ visibility and faces scrutiny over alleged underworld links and a disputed apartment deal.
  • The winner will hold veto power over legislation and shape Poland’s stance on EU integration, Prime Minister Tusk’s reform agenda and support for Ukraine.
