Trust in U.S. News Media Falls to Record Low, Gallup Finds

The new reading highlights a decades-long erosion in confidence driven by stark partisan divides.

Overview

  • Gallup reports only 28% of U.S. adults trust newspapers, television and radio to report fully, accurately and fairly, the lowest level it has recorded.
  • The share is down from 31% last year and far below the more than 70% who expressed trust in the mid-1970s.
  • About seven in ten say they have not very much or no trust in mainstream outlets.
  • A wide partisan gap persists, with Republican trust not exceeding 20% since 2015 and 62% now saying they have no trust, while 51% of Democrats express trust and 9% report no trust.
  • The survey was conducted Sept. 2–16 among 1,000 U.S. adults with a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
