Citing a review of his ties to Elon Musk, the White House has left NASA without a confirmed leader during proposed deep funding cuts.

Overview

  • President Trump pulled Jared Isaacman’s nomination on May 31 after a “thorough review of prior associations” that officials say centered on his connections to Elon Musk.
  • The decision coincided with Musk’s departure from the White House Department of Government Efficiency and reflects internal clashes, including those involving personnel chief Sergio Gor.
  • Isaacman, who advanced through the Senate Commerce Committee in a 19-9 vote, disputed that his past donations to Democrats were a new issue and said he holds no grievance with the president.
  • Aerospace stakeholders and lawmakers warned that the leadership void could hamper NASA’s ability to advocate against a nearly 25 percent cut in its proposed 2026 budget.
  • NASA will continue under acting administrator Janet Petro as the agency and industry await the White House’s announcement of a new nominee.
