Trump Unveils Oct. 1 Tariffs: 100% on Branded Drugs, 50% on Kitchen/Bath Furniture, 25% on Heavy Trucks

EU officials opened talks with Washington to pursue exemptions under the new measures.

Overview

  • President Donald Trump announced the new sector-focused duties in posts on Truth Social, with all measures taking effect on October 1.
  • Branded and patented pharmaceuticals will face a 100% tariff unless a company has begun building a U.S. manufacturing facility, which Trump defined as a site in startup or under construction.
  • Kitchen and bathroom furniture and related products will be subject to a 50% tariff, while heavy truck imports will be hit with a 25% levy.
  • The move complicates a transatlantic arrangement that just set most U.S.–EU tariffs at 15%, with steel and aluminum still excluded and remaining at 50%.
  • EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic met U.S. counterpart Jamieson Greer to explore carve-outs and further cooperation in response to the announcement.
