The White House has ordered a weeklong federal patrol of the capital to address crime with legal experts noting that a repeal of the Home Rule Act in Congress would be required to federalize the city.

Overview

  • The administration has mobilized the U.S. Park Police and agents from the FBI, DEA, ATF and ICE for a seven-day patrol in D.C. beginning this week.
  • President Trump posted on Truth Social that failure by local officials to curb violent crime would leave him ‘‘no choice but to take Federal control of the City.’’
  • Legal analysts emphasize that overturning the 1973 Home Rule Act would require an act of Congress before the president could strip the district of its elected government.
  • The surge order followed an attempted carjacking that injured a Department of Government Efficiency staff member over the weekend.
  • Official data show that carjackings are down 37 percent and overall violent crime has fallen by 26 percent so far in 2025 compared with last year.
