Overview

  • The executive order signed July 31 reinstates the Presidential Fitness Test in place of the Obama-era Youth Fitness Program in public schools.
  • The President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition has been reestablished under Health and Human Services with Kennedy Jr. at its head.
  • Prominent athletes including Bryson DeChambeau, Harrison Butker and Annika Sorenstam will help develop the award criteria for the renewed fitness initiative.
  • The revived assessment will measure students’ performance in events such as a one-mile run, sit-ups, push-ups, pull-ups and a sit-and-reach test.
  • Administration officials say the move responds to a May HHS report on sedentary lifestyles and positions U.S. youth for upcoming international sports events.
