Overview
- On July 31, President Trump signed an executive order reinstating the Presidential Fitness Test for middle and high school students.
- The order reestablishes the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition under HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., with professional golfer Bryson DeChambeau appointed as chair.
- The council is directed to develop school-based programs that reward excellence in physical education and to set criteria for a new Presidential Fitness Award.
- The initiative restores the original 1966 fitness assessment, which was replaced in 2012 by a health-focused Youth Fitness Program, to address ‘‘crisis levels’’ of childhood obesity, inactivity, chronic disease, and poor nutrition.
- Trump hosted a signing ceremony at the White House alongside athletes including Harrison Butker, Annika Sorenstam, Paul “Triple H” Levesque and Lawrence Taylor to champion the return of competitive fitness standards.
