Overview

  • The measure bars entry to the US from 12 countries deemed high risk, including Afghanistan, Iran and Yemen, and partially restricts visas for seven more such as Cuba and Venezuela.
  • Exceptions cover lawful permanent residents, existing visa holders, refugees, foreign government officials and athletes traveling to the World Cup or Olympics.
  • Visas issued before June 9 will remain valid and the ban takes effect at 12:01 am EDT on June 9.
  • The administration will review the restrictions every 90 days and may lift or add countries based on “material improvements” to their screening procedures.
  • Iran’s foreign ministry labeled the policy discriminatory and in breach of international law, accusing US policymakers of a racist bias.
