Trump Restores Original Names of Seven Army Bases with New Honorees

The Pentagon will immediately rename each base to honor a decorated soldier with the same last name instead of the Confederate general

President Donald Trump is joined by 18th Airborne Corps Commander Lt. Gen. Gregory Anderson (in beret) and other military and civilian leaders, including Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, as they watch a demonstration by Special Operations soldiers in Fort Bragg, N.C.

Overview

  • On June 10 at Fort Bragg, Trump announced the restoration of Fort Pickett, Fort Hood, Fort Gordon, Fort Rucker, Fort Polk, Fort A.P. Hill and Fort Robert E. Lee to their original titles.
  • Each installation will honor a different namesake, from Medal of Honor recipient Master Sgt. Gary I. Gordon at Fort Gordon to Gen. James H. Polk at Fort Polk, rather than the original Confederate figures.
  • Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth earlier this year brought back Fort Liberty as Fort Bragg and Fort Moore as Fort Benning under the same-surname policy.
  • Secretary of the Army Daniel Driscoll has been ordered to immediately implement the renaming directive, overturning the 2023 recommendations of the Congress-established Naming Commission.
  • Retired Brig. Gen. Ty Seidule condemned the decision as defying Congress’s bipartisan mandate to remove Confederate references, while Trump cited superstition and historical continuity to justify the reversals.
