Trump Promises to End Birthright Citizenship, Target Children of Undocumented Immigrants If Elected in 2024

Former President Donald Trump pledged to issue an executive order blocking children of undocumented immigrants from automatically becoming U.S. citizens if elected to a second term in 2024.
Trump took aim at the country’s long-standing “birthright citizenship” policy, which grants citizenship to virtually all children born in the U.S. regardless of their parents’ immigration status.
Trump referred to his proposed order as the “correct interpretation of the law,” following up on a legal theory laid out by his former Deputy National Security Advisor Michael Anton.
Legal scholars have argued that the “jurisdiction” requirement only includes a narrow list of exceptions, including children of foreign diplomats, and cannot extend to children of migrants born in the U.S.
million U.S. citizens 18 and under had at least one undocumented parent as of 2018, according to an American Immigration Council report published in June 2021.
