Trump-Pardoned Jan. 6 Rioter Charged With Threatening To Kill Hakeem Jeffries

An anonymous tip led to an FBI–state police arrest on a felony terroristic‑threat charge, renewing scrutiny of Trump’s blanket Jan. 6 pardons.

Overview

  • Christopher Moynihan, 34, was arrested in Clinton, N.Y., after court documents say he texted plans to “eliminate” Hakeem Jeffries ahead of the Democrat’s Monday speech at the Economic Club of New York.
  • Texts cited in the complaint, sent on Friday, read in part: “I cannot allow this terrorist to live… he must be eliminated… I will kill him for the future,” and prosecutors say they placed the recipient in reasonable fear.
  • New York State Police, working with the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force after an anonymous tip, charged Moynihan with making a terroristic threat, a Class D felony under New York law.
  • Moynihan was arraigned and remanded to the Dutchess County Justice and Transition Center in lieu of $10,000 cash bail, a $30,000 bond, or an $80,000 partially secured bond, with a court appearance set for Thursday.
  • Previously convicted in 2022 for obstructing an official proceeding and other offenses from Jan. 6 and sentenced to 21 months in 2023, Moynihan was pardoned by President Trump in January; Jeffries thanked law enforcement and criticized the mass clemency as reoffending cases mount.
