Overview
- President Trump has put forward Vice Adm. Brad Cooper to lead U.S. Central Command and Lt. Gen. Dagvin Anderson for U.S. Africa Command, subject to Senate confirmation.
- Cooper, currently CENTCOM’s deputy commander and former head of the Navy’s 5th Fleet in Bahrain, would be only the second Navy admiral to helm the Middle East command.
- Anderson brings more than 3,400 flight hours—including 738 in combat—and extensive special operations experience, positioning him as the first Air Force general to head AFRICOM.
- These nominations coincide with Army Gen. Erik Kurilla’s planned retirement at CENTCOM and replace Gen. Michael Langley at AFRICOM.
- The new commanders are expected to advance U.S. efforts on a Gaza ceasefire, counter Houthi activity in Yemen and strengthen partnerships against extremist groups in Africa.
