Trump loses immunity in Carroll defamation lawsuit, DOJ reverses position

The Department of Justice reversed its position that Trump was immune from liability in a defamation lawsuit filed by E. Jean Carroll.
Carroll accused Trump of sexual assault in the 1990s; Trump denied the allegations and insulted Carroll.
A jury found Trump liable for defaming and sexually abusing Carroll, awarding her $5 million in damages.
The DOJ now says Trump's remarks about Carroll were personal in nature, not made in an official capacity as president.
With no immunity, Trump will have to defend himself in Carroll's defamation suit set for trial in January 2024.
