Trump Imposes 10% Section 232 Tariff on Softwood Lumber, Adds Levies on Cabinets

The proclamation cites a national security finding under Section 232 to layer new charges onto existing duties.

Overview

  • Effective Oct. 14, a new 10% tariff on softwood timber and lumber will apply on top of existing anti-dumping and countervailing duties.
  • Affected Canadian producers now face combined import taxes exceeding 45% on many shipments, according to industry groups.
  • The order also sets a 25% tariff on kitchen cabinets, vanities, and other upholstered wooden products starting Oct. 14, with rates scheduled to rise to 50% and 30% on Jan. 1, 2026 unless deals are reached.
  • The White House said the products covered by this proclamation are separate from the earlier “Liberation Day” tariff package, and Commerce must report back by Oct. 1, 2026 on hardwood imports.
  • Canadian industry groups condemned the move and warned of higher U.S. housing costs, while Ottawa has shifted legal strategy, kept other challenges active, and announced C$1.2 billion in supports as analysts flag risks of supply curtailments and near-term price pressure.
