Trump Approves Ambler Road, Orders Permits, U.S. Takes Stake in Trilogy Metals

The decision pairs a directive to reissue permits with a $35.6 million move to take a 10% stake in Trilogy Metals.

Overview

  • Trump approved AIDEA’s appeal and directed the Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to promptly reissue permits for the 211-mile industrial road.
  • The route would cut through about 26 miles of Gates of the Arctic National Park and cross 11 rivers and thousands of streams to reach the Ambler Mining District.
  • The U.S. will invest $35.6 million for a 10% equity stake in Trilogy Metals, with warrants for an additional 7.5%, a transaction that remains subject to required approvals.
  • Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said the project will advance in phases beginning with a pilot single-lane gravel road before expansion under joint ownership by the state, federal government and Native villages.
  • Alaska Native tribes and environmental groups warn of threats to caribou, salmon and subsistence livelihoods and plan legal challenges, while the White House cites critical mineral access, 2,730 construction jobs and more than $1.1 billion in projected state revenues.
