Trump and Zelensky Launch Ukraine Peace Working Groups After Mar-a-Lago Talks

Trump says a deal could come within weeks, with territory and the Zaporizhzhia plant still unresolved.

Overview

  • After more than two hours of talks at Mar-a-Lago, the leaders announced joint working groups and named teams including Marco Rubio, Pete Hegseth, Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner and Gen. Dan Kane for the U.S., and Rustem Umerov, Andriy Gnatov and Serhii Kyslytsia for Ukraine.
  • Trump said the United States, Russia and Ukraine are much closer to an agreement and suggested it could be reached within weeks, while stressing that the territorial question remains unsettled.
  • He urged Kyiv to move quickly on a deal, warning that Ukraine could lose additional territory in the coming months if negotiations drag.
  • Trump spoke with Vladimir Putin before meeting Zelensky, Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov said the two leaders agreed to a follow-up call, and Sergey Lavrov stated Russia is ready to keep working with U.S. negotiators.
  • Zelensky said territorial concessions were discussed and indicated a settlement could be approved by parliament rather than a referendum, as European leaders joined a post-meeting video call focused on security guarantees and voiced concerns about waning U.S. support.
