Trump and Zelensky Discuss Air-Defense Deals for Ukraine, Including Tomahawk Option

Kyiv will send senior officials to Washington next week to pursue air defenses, energy assistance and action on frozen Russian assets.

Overview

  • Zelensky called his conversation with President Trump “very positive and productive,” citing work on concrete agreements to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses.
  • Axios reported the leaders discussed possible Tomahawk long-range missiles for Ukraine, with no final decision, after Trump said he had “sort of made a decision” on sales via NATO partners.
  • A Ukrainian delegation led by Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko, with Andriy Yermak and sanctions chief Vladyslav Vlasiuk, will visit Washington to negotiate air defense, energy aid, sanctions and frozen assets.
  • The escalation in talks follows Russia’s latest large strike using more than 30 missiles and over 450 drones that hit energy infrastructure, caused casualties and blackouts, and left Kyiv restoring power to over 800,000 residents.
  • Zelensky announced major agreements with Norway and the Netherlands to help rebuild Ukraine’s energy system, as Russia warns Tomahawk transfers would represent a new stage of escalation.
