China and US agree to revive tariff talks amid rare earth tensions: Trump after Xi call

Overview

  • President Trump said the June 5 call with President Xi lasted about 90 minutes, produced a “very positive conclusion” and focused exclusively on trade.
  • Both leaders committed to convene in-person negotiations, appointing Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to lead the U.S. side.
  • Trump announced that key questions over rare earth minerals have been resolved, stating there should “no longer be any questions respecting the complexity” of those products.
  • The talks build on a 90-day tariff rollback deal struck in Geneva on May 12, which had stalled after mutual accusations of noncompliance.
  • Xi invited President Trump and First Lady Melania to visit China, and Trump reciprocated by extending an invitation to Xi and Peng Liyuan to come to the United States.
