Overview

  • The administration froze $6.8 billion in federal K–12 grants on July 1 to vet spending it said supported a radical leftwing agenda
  • Last week, the Education Department released $1.3 billion for after-school and summer learning programs under pressure from Republican senators
  • Ten Republican senators sent a public letter and a coalition of states filed suits under the Impoundment Control Act to challenge the funding pause
  • The remaining formula grants cover teacher professional development, English learner services, migrant education, academic enrichment and adult literacy
  • School districts and nonprofits warned that the delay risked closures and cuts to tutoring, enrichment and summer programs ahead of the fall term
