Overview

  • The Commerce Department is processing Nvidia’s export license applications with assurances of prompt approval.
  • Nvidia has ordered 300,000 additional H20 GPUs from TSMC to boost its inventory beyond an estimated 600,000–900,000 units in response to strong Chinese demand.
  • Bipartisan lawmakers including Reps. Raja Krishnamoorthi and Gregory Meeks and Senators Schumer, Warner, Reed, Coons and Warren urged a return to stricter controls in letters to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
  • A coalition of 20 former national security experts warned that resuming H20 exports could erode the United States’ AI and military edge by accelerating China’s frontier AI capabilities.
  • The decision reflects a split within the administration between pro-business Silicon Valley voices and national security hawks over using export restrictions as bargaining chips in trade negotiations.
