Overview

  • The Department of Homeland Security served administrative subpoenas demanding records, communications and other documents related to Harvard’s Student and Exchange Visitor Program certification dating back to January 2020.
  • DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said the subpoenas were necessary after Harvard allegedly refused non-coercive requests and allowed foreign students to abuse visa privileges and promote violence.
  • The Departments of Education and Health and Human Services notified the New England Commission of Higher Education that Harvard may be in violation of federal anti-discrimination laws, putting its accreditation at risk.
  • Harvard called the subpoenas unwarranted but affirmed it will comply with lawful requests and continues to challenge visa bans, funding freezes and accreditation threats in court.
  • The administration has frozen over $2.2 billion in federal research funding and faces multiple injunctions as Harvard prepares for a July 21 hearing on its lawsuit to unfreeze grant money.
