Trump Administration Eyes Canceling DOE EV Grants, Including GM’s $500 Million Lansing Award

The Energy Department says the listed awards remain under individualized review with no terminations decided.

Overview

  • A planning document circulating on Capitol Hill identifies more than $16 billion in Department of Energy projects under consideration for cancellation across more than a dozen states.
  • More than $1 billion in potential cuts involve grants for General Motors and Stellantis, including a $500 million GM award to convert the Lansing Grand River plant that was projected to retain about 650 jobs and add about 50.
  • Stellantis entries on the list include a previously reworked $335 million Belvidere, Illinois project and a $250 million plan to retool the Indiana Transmission Plant in Kokomo for electric drive modules.
  • Michigan-specific awards total roughly $800 million, with other listed recipients including Dow ($95 million), Mercedes-Benz ($285 million in South Carolina), Cummins ($75 million in Indiana), Ford (about $28 million), Bosch ($30 million) and LuxWall ($32 million).
  • President Trump has said he intends to eliminate programs during the shutdown, while DOE spokesman Ben Dietderich emphasized that no award on the list has been terminated.
