Overview
- In January, officials directed at least 17 additional parks across Arizona, Texas, Colorado, Utah, Montana and Wyoming to remove or revise interpretive materials, including at Grand Canyon, Glacier, Big Bend and Zion.
- At Grand Canyon, staff removed portions of an exhibit describing settler exploitation and the displacement of tribes, and roadside signs on climate and pollution were flagged for possible removal.
- Glacier National Park materials on glacier retreat and human-caused climate change, including a brochure, a visitor video and a gift-shop sign, were ordered removed or changed.
- Big Bend was told to eliminate nearly 20 displays on geology, fossils and other topics, some in Spanish and English, with documents providing little explanation for the changes.
- A Grand Teton plaque detailing Gustavus Doane’s role in the 1870 Marias Massacre was removed, as the Interior Department defends the review and groups including the Sierra Club and Save Our Signs seek transparency and document removals.
