Trump administration ends Temporary Protected Status for Nepalese migrants

The Department of Homeland Security determined that Nepal’s post-earthquake recovery justifies lifting protections for roughly 7,000 nonpermanent beneficiaries by August 5, 2025.

US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem speaks during the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) at the Exhibition and Congress Centre of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship near Rzeszow-Jasionka airport, Poland, on May 27, 2025.

Overview

  • The Department of Homeland Security will terminate TPS for Nepal on August 5, 2025, following a 60-day notice period.
  • About 12,700 Nepalese nationals currently hold TPS, with around 5,500 already permanent residents and roughly 7,000 facing departure or status adjustment.
  • Secretary Kristi Noem cited substantial reconstruction and improved environmental disaster preparedness since the 2015 quake as the basis for ending the program.
  • This move follows recent TPS revocations for Venezuelans, Haitians, Afghans and Cameroonians under President Trump’s broader rollback of immigration protections.
  • The U.S. State Department continues to advise Level 2 travel caution for Nepal over ongoing political violence risks.
