Overview
- On Monday morning a truck veered across lanes on the A1 motorway between Arezzo and Valdarno and collided with an ambulance, three cars and a caravan.
- All three fatalities were occupants of the ambulance and eighteen people were injured, including one in critical condition and four in serious condition.
- The maxi-emergenza protocol mobilized two Pegaso air ambulances, an automedica from Arezzo, nursing support units, fire brigades and highway police.
- Autostrade per l’Italia has closed the motorway in both directions and instructed drivers bound for Bologna to exit at Valdichiana, follow the Siena–Bettolle road and re-enter at Valdarno, while those heading to Rome should exit at Firenze Impruneta, continue via Siena and the Siena–Bettolle connector to Valdichiana.
- An official inquiry has been launched to determine why the truck abruptly changed lanes and triggered the multi-vehicle crash.
