Três Rios Holds Court-Ordered Mayoral Rerun Today With Five Tickets on the Ballot

Brazil’s top electoral court mandated the new vote after upholding the incumbent’s ineligibility tied to a prior state accounts ruling.

Overview

  • Some 61,308 eligible voters can cast ballots from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Brasília time, and those elected will serve through December 31, 2028.
  • The registered tickets are led by Anderson Bento de Medeiros (PRD), Beatriz Retto Bogossian (PSD), Jonas Mascarenhas Macedo (Podemos/MDB), Jorge Luis de Almeida (DC) and Juarez de Souza Pereira (Solidariedade/Novo).
  • The TSE unanimously confirmed on July 1 that re-elected mayor Joacir Barbaglio was ineligible, ordering a new election regardless of the acórdão’s publication or appeals.
  • The ruling followed a 2019 state audit court rejection of Barbaglio’s accounts from his time as city council president, and he had run sub judice in 2024.
  • Voters are advised to check TRE-RJ for relocated polling sites, may identify themselves with e-Título or photo ID, and must leave cellphones outside the voting booth; similar reruns occur today in three Paraná cities, while Muaná’s vote was suspended by a TSE minister.
