Troy Melton Cleared to Begin Normal Offseason After Arm Evaluation

The Tigers found no structural damage to his throwing arm, a result that eases short-term rotation concerns as he projects to be a key 2027 starter.

Overview

  • The Detroit Tigers announced on Thursday that follow-up evaluations found no structural issues with Troy Melton’s throwing arm and that he has started a normal offseason workout program.
  • Melton left his Sept. 20 start at Chicago with right forearm tightness and was put on the 15-day injured list on Sept. 21 as a precaution while the team ran tests.
  • Earlier in 2026 Melton was diagnosed with right elbow inflammation in late February, went on the 60-day injured list and returned to the majors on May 24.
  • Melton finished the season with 20 starts, a 2.76 ERA and 94 strikeouts in about 114 innings, numbers that position him as a projected second starter behind Framber Valdez in Detroit’s 2027 plans.
  • While the clean bill of health reduces immediate roster risk and helps Detroit plan its winter work, the club will continue to monitor Melton’s arm in the offseason because of his earlier elbow inflammation.
