Tropical Storm Wipha Triggers Evacuations and Travel Suspensions Ahead of Guangdong Landfall

From the Philippines to Hong Kong, authorities have issued warnings, suspended ferry and flight operations, evacuated over 450 families, with schools closed in Hong Kong as the storm nears the southern China coast.

Overview

  • PAGASA issued Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 2 for Batanes, Cagayan and other northern Luzon provinces and raised orange and yellow rainfall warnings across eight central and southern regions.
  • At least 458 families, or 1,629 people, were evacuated to shelters in Luzon as swollen rivers inundated low-lying communities, and sea travel was suspended in northern ports due to 4.5–6 m waves.
  • Wipha’s passage south of Taiwan on July 19 led to the cancellation of several domestic flights and the suspension of 14 ferry routes amid rough seas and strong winds.
  • Guangdong province activated a Level IV emergency response and China’s National Meteorological Centre issued a yellow typhoon alert ahead of Wipha’s forecast landfall on July 20 between western Guangdong and the Pearl River Delta.
  • Hong Kong hoisted its T8 cyclone warning, canceled over 250 flights, suspended bus services and closed schools as the storm approached 280 km southeast of the city.
