Tropical Storm Vance Hits Northwestern Mexico, Sinaloa Suspends Evening Classes

Officials say heavy localized rain plus gusty coastal winds with 2–3 meter waves will raise flood and erosion risk for coastal and low-lying communities.

Overview

  • Mexico’s Servicio Meteorológico Nacional reports Vance remains a tropical storm located southeast of Cabo San Lucas and west-southwest of Mazatlán and continues to produce heavy showers.
  • Forecasters expect very heavy to intense localized rainfall, with 75–150 mm likely in central and southern Sinaloa and 50–75 mm possible in parts of Baja California Sur, Durango and Nayarit.
  • SMN warns of gusts up to 40–60 km/h along Sinaloa and Nayarit coasts and waves of about 2.0–3.0 meters that will raise the risk to coastal infrastructure and small craft.
  • The state education authority, working with Protección Civil, has suspended in-person evening classes across 20 Sinaloa municipalities as a precaution and issued public safety advisories.
  • Municipal crews in Mazatlán and Guasave are clearing drains, removing debris and reinforcing shorelines to limit flooding and erosion, actions that aim to protect businesses, roads and tourist areas from wave-driven damage.
