Overview

• The FAA imposed ground stops at more than a dozen airports from Florida to New York, halting flights at LaGuardia until at least 6:15 p.m. and Newark until 7 p.m.
• FlightAware data show 8,831 delays and 1,600 cancellations as of 7:30 p.m. EDT, with JFK flights suffering an average delay of three hours and 15 minutes.
• Other major hubs hit by severe delays include Boston Logan, Baltimore/Washington International, Reagan National, Denver International and Dulles International.
• The ground holds were triggered by a tropical storm moving toward the Gulf that rolled into the East Coast travel corridor Monday evening.
• The National Weather Service forecasts additional strong to severe thunderstorms across the East Coast, South and northern Central Plains today.
