Overview
- The National Hurricane Center confirmed Sonia as the 17th named storm of the 2025 eastern Pacific season after it developed from Tropical Depression Eighteen-E.
- At the time of the advisory, the center was near 13.3°N, 117.6°W, moving west around 15 km/h with maximum sustained winds above 65 km/h.
- Forecasters reported no direct impact to Mexican coasts for now, with monitoring focused on potential rains, elevated seas and gusty winds over Pacific waters.
- Mexico’s Conagua and SMN had tracked the precursor low with rising formation odds and signaled likely weekend intensification before the upgrade to Sonia.
- Separately, SMN warned that Cold Front No. 10, an upper trough and the subtropical jet would drive strong winds, possible whirlwinds and showers in northern and parts of western and southern states.
