Tropical Storm Raymond Soaks Mexico With Veracruz Flooding and Two Deaths Reported

Officials warn the system will run parallel to the Pacific coast through the weekend, likely weakening but still generating hazardous rain, surf and wind that could extend toward Baja California Sur.

Overview

  • At 06:00 local time Friday, Raymond’s center was about 95 km south of Punta San Telmo, Michoacán, and 265 km west of Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, with sustained winds near 95 km/h, gusts to 110 km/h, moving west-northwest at roughly 22 km/h.
  • The National Meteorological Service forecast intense rainfall for Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán and Guerrero, very strong rain in Nayarit, coastal wind gusts up to 80 km/h, 3–4 m seas and possible waterspouts.
  • A tropical-storm prevention zone is in effect from Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, to Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco, with a watch for Baja California Sur from Los Barriles to Santa Fe.
  • Heavy rain was recorded in 31 of 32 states, with Veracruz among the hardest hit as the Cazones River overflowed in Poza Rica and dozens of municipalities reported flooding, landslides and infrastructure damage.
  • Authorities activated Plan DN-III, Plan Marina and Plan Tajín, deployed Navy, Army and National Guard units for rescues, opened shelters including 55 in Michoacán, and closed beaches and some ports such as in Colima.
