Tropical Storm Raymond Nears Baja California Sur With Landfall Possible Today

Dangerous rain and surf are expected, with weakening likely once the system moves into the Gulf of California.

  • At 4 a.m. ET, the center was about 235 km south-southeast of the tip of Baja California, carrying sustained winds near 75 km/h and moving northwest at roughly 26 km/h, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.
  • Mexico kept tropical-storm warnings in place from Manzanillo to Cabo Corrientes, including Islas Marías, and from Los Barriles to Santa Fe in Baja California Sur.
  • The national weather service said the storm could come ashore along the southern coast of Baja California Sur later today, with strong gusts, high seas and hazardous surf.
  • Forecasts call for 10–15 cm of rain across parts of Sonora and northern Chihuahua, with 2–5 cm along coastal stretches from Michoacán to southern Baja California Sur, bringing a risk of flash flooding.
  • Nayarit was advised to expect strong to very strong rain from 8 a.m., frequent lightning with hail, wind gusts of 70–90 km/h and waves of 4–5 meters tied to Raymond’s swells.
