Tropical Storm Priscilla Strengthens Off Mexico, Forecast to Become a Hurricane

Despite an offshore track, the storm’s broad wind field is poised to deliver flooding rains plus hazardous surf to coastal communities.

Overview

  • As of early Sunday, Priscilla had maximum sustained winds of 65 mph and was located about 305 miles south-southwest of Cabo Corrientes, moving northwest at roughly 5 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.
  • A tropical storm watch is in effect from Punta San Telmo to Punta Mita, where tropical storm conditions are possible Sunday into Monday.
  • Forecasters expect 4 to 6 inches of rain with local totals up to 8 inches in coastal Michoacán and far western Guerrero, with 2 to 4 inches in Colima and western Jalisco, posing a flash flooding risk in higher terrain.
  • Swells from Priscilla are producing life-threatening surf and rip currents along southwestern Mexico and are set to reach west-central Mexico and the southern Baja California peninsula by Monday.
  • The NHC projects a track generally parallel to the southwestern coast and says Priscilla could reach hurricane status by Sunday night or early Monday, while separate Tropical Storm Octave remains far offshore with no coastal watches.
