Tropical Storm Priscilla Forms Off Southwestern Mexico, Triggers Coastal Watches

Forecasters warn of hazardous coastal conditions as the system tracks northwest offshore.

Overview

  • Priscilla was located about 460 km south-southwest of Manzanillo with sustained winds near 75 km/h and higher gusts, moving northwest at roughly 11 km/h.
  • The Mexican government issued a tropical-storm watch from Punta San Telmo, Michoacán, to Punta Mita, Nayarit, covering parts of the southwestern Pacific coast.
  • Outer bands are forecast to deliver intense rainfall of 75–150 mm in Michoacán and Guerrero and 50–75 mm in Jalisco and Colima, with wind gusts up to 80 km/h and waves of 2.5–3.5 meters on some coasts.
  • Official forecasts call for gradual strengthening with a potential upgrade to hurricane status around Oct. 6–7 as the center remains offshore early in the period.
  • SMN and the NHC highlight track and intensity uncertainty, noting scenarios that include a closer approach to Baja California Sur, and urge precautions for flooding, landslides and dangerous surf.
