Tropical Storm Peipah Batters Japan With Twin Landfalls, Flooding and Mass Evacuations

Forecasters warn of continued torrential rain with strong winds during its transition to an extratropical cyclone.

Overview

  • Tropical Storm Peipah made landfall near Sukumo in Kochi Prefecture around 1 a.m. Friday and again in northern Wakayama around 9 a.m., then tracked east along Honshu’s Pacific coast.
  • Authorities issued evacuation orders for more than 600,000 people, and local reports counted at least 24 injuries and damage to dozens of homes.
  • Extreme rainfall and gusts were logged, including around 100 mm in an hour near Onagawa, 266–267 mm in 12–24 hours at Shimokitayama, and peak winds near 94 kph at Cape Muroto.
  • Power and transport were disrupted, with roughly 13,690 customers out in Shizuoka, partial suspensions and delays on the Tōkaidō Shinkansen, and flight delays and cancellations.
  • The JTWC says Peipah has begun extratropical transition and could intensify as it moves away from Honshu, while the JMA forecasts additional heavy totals across Tokai, Kinki, Kanto-Koshin and parts of Tohoku.
