Tropical Storm Kalmaegi Strengthens Toward Central Vietnam as Schools Close and Tourists Leave Islands

Forecasters expect further strengthening toward central Vietnam following deadly flooding in the Philippines.

Overview

  • Vietnam’s meteorological service placed Kalmaegi’s center near the Spratly archipelago about 550 km southeast of Gia Lai, moving northwest at 20–25 km/h with winds of 70–130 km/h and waves up to 10 meters.
  • Khanh Hoa province canceled classes on November 6–7 and coastal areas from Da Nang to Khanh Hoa were placed on preparedness for high winds and rough seas.
  • The Russian Hydrometeorological Center projected further intensification with gusts up to 60 m/s on November 6.
  • AFP, citing Philippine police, reported the death toll has topped 100 after severe rains, floods and landslides, with authorities counting about 706,000 people affected and 348,000 in evacuation centers.
  • The Philippine Armed Forces deployed 1,312 personnel who have rescued 48 people and assisted in evacuating roughly 130,000 residents from inundated areas.
