Tropical Storm Jerry Forms in Central Atlantic, Forecast to Strengthen as It Nears Northern Leewards

Forecasters expect a turn that keeps the system offshore of the U.S. and Mexico as island communities prepare for possible wind, rain and hazardous seas later this week.

Overview

  • The National Hurricane Center says Jerry, the season’s tenth named storm, is packing roughly 45 mph winds and was about 1,300 miles east-southeast of the northern Leeward Islands when advisories began.
  • Guidance indicates strengthening to a Category 1 hurricane within about 48 hours with a track passing near or just north of the northern Leewards late this week.
  • Tropical-storm alerts have been issued for several islands, including Antigua and Barbuda, Anguilla, St. Barts, St. Martin and Sint Maarten, with rain and gusty winds possible depending on the exact path.
  • Even if the center stays offshore, elevated surf, dangerous rip currents and rough seas are expected across parts of the northeastern Caribbean, posing risks to coastal and maritime interests.
  • An approaching cold front should steer Jerry away from the U.S. mainland, and Mexico’s meteorological service reports no threat to its coasts, while forecasters also monitor late-season disturbances in the southwest Gulf and western Caribbean.
