Tropical Depression Mario Weakens Offshore, Still Drenches Mexico’s Pacific States

Rain bands from the system continue to trigger dangerous conditions along the coasts of Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, Guerrero.

Overview

  • Mario is centered about 105 km south-southwest of Manzanillo and 280 km south-southeast of Cabo Corrientes with maximum sustained winds near 55 km/h and gusts to 75 km/h, moving WNW at 24 km/h, according to the SMN.
  • Intense rainfall is forecast for Jalisco with very strong totals in Colima, Michoacán and Guerrero due to the system’s cloud bands and moisture influx.
  • Coastal hazards include winds of 20–30 km/h with gusts of 40–60 km/h and wave heights of 1.5–2.5 meters along shores of Jalisco, Colima and western Michoacán.
  • Authorities warn that downpours could cause urban flooding, landslides, rising rivers, reduced visibility on roads and falling trees or signage.
  • The SMN expects the system to cease affecting national territory during the early hours of Saturday and urges the public to heed guidance from Conagua and civil protection agencies.
