Overview
- Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha inaugurated the Agartala Tea Auction Centre at the Pandit Nehru Complex, establishing the state’s first in-state auction facility.
- TTDCL says the centre will place sellers and buyers closer together to shorten the current consignment sale cycle of about 44 days and expects roughly a 40% reduction in sale time.
- The state’s tea sector includes 54 large gardens and about 2,800 small growers who together produce roughly 9–10 million kg a year and have historically sent about 60% of produce to auctions outside the state.
- TTDCL has held outreach with brokerage firms and buyers in Kolkata and Guwahati and reports interest from reputed brokers; the state is also offering transport subsidies and an online auction portal to attract traders.
- Officials caution long-term benefits for prices and grower incomes will depend on sustained buyer participation, competitive bidding and smooth day-to-day operation of the new auction centre.
