Overview

  • The Tripura government staged statewide observances on Tuesday, with Chief Minister Manik Saha paying homage at Agartala’s Zero Point near Ujjayanta Palace.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP president J.P. Nadda posted tributes on X, calling the last ruler the architect of modern Tripura and citing his focus on education, infrastructure and governance.
  • Saha said earlier Left Front governments downplayed the monarch’s contributions and asserted the current administration is advancing his vision, noting steps such as renaming Agartala’s airport for the ruler.
  • Opposition Congress organized cultural events and warned against erosion of tribal–non-tribal harmony, while Tipra Motha chief Pradyot Manikya urged unity and attended a programme where a Special Postal Cover was released.
  • Historians note Bir Bikram was born on August 19, 1908 and that Tripura merged with India on October 15, 1949 through an agreement signed by regent Kanchan Prabha Devi, with one republished report carrying an incorrect lifespan notation.
