Overview

  • Tripura High Court disposed of the PIL filed by Dr. Bijoy Debbarma and student activist John Debbarma after their June 24 representation to the state government drew no reply.
  • Petitioners had sought court orders to establish Foreigners Tribunals and detention centers needed to implement the Ministry of Home Affairs’ four-stage process of detection, adjudication, detention and deportation.
  • A bench led by Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh granted the government three to four months to outline its action plan and allowed petitioners to return if no response materializes.
  • Advocate-General Shaktimoy Chakraborty said the petition was disposed on merit because Tripura had not been given sufficient time to address the activists’ representation.
  • Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma has written to Home Minister Amit Shah urging federal intervention to identify and deport undocumented migrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar.
