Trillions of Cicadas to Swarm U.S. in Historic Emergence

For the first time in over two centuries, two broods of periodical cicadas will emerge simultaneously across 17 states, marking the largest bug emergence in centuries.

  • Trillions of periodical cicadas, known for their red eyes and loud collective song, are set to emerge in parts of the U.S., an event not seen in decades or possibly centuries.
  • The simultaneous emergence of Brood XIII and XIX, last recorded in 1803 during Thomas Jefferson's presidency, covers parts of 17 states across the U.S.
  • Periodical cicadas, emerging every 13 or 17 years, are distinguished from their annual counterparts by their black bodies and red eyes.
  • Experts predict the cicadas' numbers could reach hundreds of trillions, possibly quadrillions, as they cover territories equal to the size of Delaware.
  • Despite their overwhelming presence, cicadas pose no harm to humans or pets but can affect young trees and fruit crops, which can be mitigated with preventive measures.
