Trilateral Talks End Without Deal With Next Round Set for Feb. 1

Ukrainian leaders are seeking more air defenses after mass strikes left parts of Kyiv without heat in subzero weather.

Overview

  • Ukrainian, Russian and U.S. delegations called the Abu Dhabi meetings constructive but reported no breakthrough, with talks to resume on February 1, according to U.S. officials and the Kremlin.
  • Russia’s latest aerial campaign has focused on energy infrastructure, with Ukraine reporting a major barrage that included 375 drones and 21 missiles, and another night of 138 drones with 110 intercepted.
  • Kyiv officials said more than 1,300 to 1,600 apartment buildings in the capital remained without heating after strikes, following earlier reports of over 800,000 Kyiv households and 400,000 in Chernihiv without power.
  • President Volodymyr Zelensky said a U.S. security guarantees document for Ukraine is "100% ready" for signature, after which it would go to the U.S. Congress and Ukraine’s parliament for ratification.
  • Territory remains the key obstacle: Moscow reiterated that Ukrainian forces must leave the Donbas, a demand Kyiv rejects, as cross-border incidents were reported in Russia’s Belgorod and Krasnodar regions.
