Overview
- The Croydon tribunal ruled on Thursday that telling a remote worker to turn her camera on during a training call amounted to disability discrimination when the request worsened her anxiety.
- Judge Liz Ord found Holiday Extras did not put in place reasonable adjustments from 24 August 2023, including allowing meetings with the camera off and reducing voice-call shifts.
- The claimant, travel consultant Laura Tait, told the tribunal she felt “overwhelmed” during the August 2023 video session, logged off, and was later signed off sick with work-related stress and anxiety.
- The company formally agreed the camera-off adjustment on 4 October 2024 but the judge said that agreement should have been effective from the date Ms Tait first raised the issue.
- The ruling stresses the legal duty to offer timely, individualised reasonable adjustments and is likely to prompt HR reviews of video-call policies and raise potential liability for employers.
